So you want to be recognized?
Personal recognition is one of the driving forces of the western world. It is almost on the upper level of the Mazlow Pyramid of needs - Esteem. And some people are willing to do the wildest of things to reach this level.
Others prefer to go there by becoming experts, or renown resources within their special field of work. And some of those come to me asking "Kai, how did you become such an expert? What schools did you take? Where did you learn this?".
Of course, they are not really interested in how I did it, but how they themselves can achieve the same. And the answer to that is pretty simple - set a goal, start walking towards it, and just don't give up. It is the same old "Get up one more time, and you will make it".
There are some good resources on the net on how to become an expert. This particular one is straight on the target. First step is always to gain the experience (this tends to take a long time, and there are many different paths to take. Patience is king, and those who do not have patience ends up in Big Brother House, actually believing that they are cool).
But, as the article so clearly states - expertise alone is not enough - people need to know about it. You need to promote it, to show it off to some extent. And as usual, showing off can soon be too much - so balance it vital. The article mentions displaying certificates and diplomas.
Sure, that helps. But personally, I prefer to share my expertise - to share my knowledge, and build an environment with more knowledge and where sharing that knowledge is not only possible, but a requirement for the whole team. That enables the team to act quicker, understand more and deliver better results.
And I guess that is one of my keys to trainings too. I want my participants to really understand, and to understand how they can apply the newly adopted knowledge and skills.
